My work in the conflict resolution field over the past 22 years has included the mediation of hundreds of cases, facilitation of group processes in the public and private sectors, as well as teaching and training. My cases in the family sector have included comprehensive divorce settlements, family mediations involving real estate, wills and estates, family businesses, parent/teen issues, and other family issues. In the employment and workplace sector, I have mediated conflicts between employees, wrongful termination and other complaints, and have facilitated management team and board meetings and meetings within and between departments and teams.
For nine years, I was the first director of the Master's degree program in Conflict and Dispute Resolution at the University of Oregon, teaching and mentoring students and building the program to a position of national prominence.
Prior to my conflict resolution work, I co-founded and managed two successful businesses, one of which grew to 150+ employees. From that experience, I have first-hand understanding of the dynamics and stresses of the workplace, the challenges of management and supervision, and the pressures and demands of business partnerships.
In addition to a Master’s degree in Conflict Resolution and 600+ hours of additional training over the years, I continue to read in and study the fields of conflict, negotiation, and conflict resolution with an abiding passion.
Being the parent of three grown children has been no small part of my education and learning.

What clients have said about my work:
"Over the years I utilized Tim’s strong services on several occasions at Canine Companions for Independence. Tim is a very capable facilitator and quick read who gets right down to business. In conflict management, he listens to all sides, cuts through the extraneous and creates a comfortable, non-combative atmosphere. I have recommended Tim to other NPO directors as I have high confidence in his process and output."
"I contacted Mr. Hicks to work with my staff to develop a culture of trust and rapport after a series of events had caused some significant issues in those areas. Mr. Hicks spent four months listening to staff, providing a safe environment for those who expressed fear and distrust, and reached out to those at every level of the organization. With the information that he gathered, Mr. Hicks worked with management staff in developing an action plan. Throughout the process, Mr. Hicks was approachable, friendly, knowledgeable, and professional. He was also realistic in identifying what could and should be prioritized for change."
